Learning tractors, synthetic CO2-neutral fuels, new technologies for e-mobility, innovative vehicle and transport systems There will also be a knowledge rally for children and a top-class stage programme. All this was presented by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) at the Open Day on Saturday, June 29, 2019, which also marked the start of this year's science festival EFFEKTE in Karlsruhe. 9,000 visitors immersed themselves in the exciting world of science at the KIT Campus East in interactive activities, expert lectures, and demonstrations.

The focus of this year's event was on the broad range of mobility topics with numerous vehicle technology facilities such as test benches and research halls on the east campus of KIT, which is also close to the test field Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg. Among other things, there were demonstrations on the ultramodern test benches for rail sensor technology and working machines as well as on an acoustic roller test bench. The students of the KA-RaceIng team demonstrated their racing cars, there was a great deal of interest at the stand of the university group Kamaro with self-propelled model robots for use in agriculture, as well as at the presentation of regenerative fuels from the reFuels research project.

But also far beyond the topic of mobility, KIT scientists presented exciting current projects: From attractable robot technologies and new materials to Energy Lab 2.0, children got their money's worth at the traditional knowledge rally and numerous participatory experiments.

Varied and informative were also the manifold activities of the student university groups and many other KIT facilities as well as of its partners and sponsors. In the buildings and in the information tents on Campus East, KIT also presented itself as an attractive place of study and employe

In the afternoon, President Professor Holger Hanselka together with the Mayor of Karlsruhe, Dr. Frank Mentrup, also gave the official starting signal for the EFFEKTE science festival, at which numerous Karlsruhe research institutions present science for participation. "AI - in Karlsruhe this abbreviation does not only stand for 'artificial intelligence'. After all, the fan city of Karlsruhe has much more to offer in the field of science, as the KIT open day impressively proves. This is why KI also stands for 'Karlsruhe Innovations'. Over the next nine days, the EFFEKTE science festival will focus on scientific innovations coming from the city of Karlsruhe," said Lord Mayor Mentrup.

Colourful stage programme

After the opening of the festival, there will be plenty of variety on the show stage until the evening, with a performance by the Austrian science cabaret artists Science Busters and the programme by TV comedian Bernhard Hoëcker.

Unifest Karlsruhe 2019

Parallel to the Open Day, the Unifest organized by the KIT student body is running on the South Campus. On several stages around the Old Stadium, live bands and DJs provide party atmosphere in the evening.
